NAC (N-Acetylcysteine): What It Is and How It Is Sold

NAC is short for N-acetylcysteine. It is a modified form of cysteine, one of the twenty amino acids your body builds proteins from. The acetyl group on the front is the whole point: it makes the molecule more stable in storage and easier to absorb than plain cysteine, which degrades quickly once exposed to air.

Why It Smells

If you have opened a bag of NAC powder, you know. Cysteine contains sulfur, and sulfur compounds smell like sulfur. That rotten-egg note is normal and is not a sign the batch has gone off.

What you should be suspicious of is NAC that smells like nothing at all. Either it has been heavily encapsulated or cut, or it is not what the label says.

Powder Versus Capsules

Powder is cheaper per gram and lets you weigh what you want. It also means dealing with the smell and the taste, which is sour and sharp. Most people who buy powder mix it into something with flavor rather than taking it straight.

Capsules cost more per gram and solve both problems. If you are taking the same amount every day, capsules are usually worth the premium just for the convenience.

What to Check on a Label

Look for the form stated in full: N-acetyl-L-cysteine. The L is the biologically active isomer, and a label that just says cysteine or NAC without specifying is being vague for a reason.

Look for a purity figure and a lot number tied to a test. NAC is a manufactured compound rather than a plant extract, so there is no excuse for a supplier not to have a certificate of analysis on the specific lot.

Check what else is in the capsule. Fillers, flow agents and magnesium stearate are common and not inherently a problem, but they should be listed.

Storage

Keep it sealed, dry and out of heat. NAC picks up moisture readily, and damp powder clumps and degrades. A container that gets opened twenty times a day in a humid kitchen will not hold up as well as one kept closed in a cool cupboard.

If the powder has gone hard in the bag or the smell has shifted from sulfur to something sour and off, it has absorbed water.
