Banisteriopsis Caapi: The Vine, Its Alkaloids, and How It Is Sold

Banisteriopsis caapi is a woody vine from the Amazon basin. It is best known as one half of ayahuasca, but it is traded on its own in considerable volume and sold in several forms that are not interchangeable. This covers the plant, its alkaloids, how it is sold, and what separates one batch from another.
The Vine
Banisteriopsis caapi belongs to Malpighiaceae. It is a large liana that climbs through forest canopy and can grow for decades, which matters commercially because older vine generally tests higher in alkaloid content than young growth.
The stem is the part used. Bark, whole stem sections and the inner woody tissue are all traded, and they are not equivalent material.
The Alkaloids
The compounds of interest are harmala alkaloids, a group of beta-carbolines. The three principal ones are harmine, harmaline and tetrahydroharmine. Harmine is usually the most abundant in caapi.
All three act as reversible inhibitors of monoamine oxidase A. Reversible is the important word: they bind and release rather than permanently disabling the enzyme, which distinguishes them from irreversible pharmaceutical MAO inhibitors. Tetrahydroharmine also has serotonin reuptake activity the other two lack.
Caapi Is Not the DMT Component
This is the most persistent misunderstanding about the plant. Banisteriopsis caapi contains no DMT. In traditional ayahuasca it is combined with a second plant, usually Psychotria viridis or Diplopterys cabrerana, which supplies that component.
The combination exists for a metabolic reason. Orally consumed DMT is broken down in the gut before reaching circulation, and the MAO inhibition from the caapi alkaloids is what allows it through. Neither plant alone produces what the pair produces.
Why the Vine Is Sold Separately
Buyers source it on its own for several reasons. Some are assembling components individually. Some are interested in caapi by itself, which has its own history of use without a DMT-containing admixture. Growers buy live cuttings to propagate, since the vine roots readily from stem sections.
Forms and How They Differ
Whole vine sections are the least processed. They are the hardest to assess or portion, because alkaloid content is not uniform along a length of stem, but they are the easiest to verify visually as genuine vine.
Shredded material is what most preparation instructions assume. It is easier to work with and easier to weigh consistently. Powdered material is more convenient still but impossible to inspect.
Extracts are reduced and sold by ratio. A ratio describes the reduction, not a guaranteed alkaloid figure, so two 10:1 extracts from different producers are not necessarily comparable.
Strain Names and What They Are Worth
Caapi is sold under informal strain names such as cielo, tucunaca and ourinhos. These come from cultivation lineages rather than from any botanical distinction, and they are rarely backed by published testing.
Treat a strain name as provenance information rather than a potency claim. Where lot testing exists it is worth considerably more.
What Varies Between Lots
Vine age is the largest variable, followed by growing region and which part of the stem was used. Drying method matters as well, and material dried slowly in humidity can arrive with mold that is not always obvious in shredded form.
Good shredded caapi is fibrous, dry, and smells faintly woody rather than musty or sour.
What to Ask Before Buying
Confirm the species, since several vines are sold under caapi-adjacent names and are not Banisteriopsis caapi. Ask which part of the plant you are getting and whether it is bark or whole stem. Ask the origin, the approximate age of the vine, and whether there is alkaloid testing on the lot.
