Kava Forms Explained: Micronized, Instant, Traditional and Extract

Kava forms, micronized, instant, traditional and extract, are four ways of preparing the same root, Piper methysticum, and the difference is how much work happens before the cup. Traditional grind makes you do the extracting at home. Micronized and instant powders do the work in advance, in two different ways. Extracts concentrate the root's kavalactones into a standardized powder. Here is how each one behaves, and what we sell in each form.

Traditional kava: medium grind, kneaded and strained

Traditional kava is ground root that you knead in water inside a strainer bag, then strain and drink. It is the oldest preparation, it gives you the most control over the strength of the batch, and it takes ten to fifteen minutes of work. Our Fiji kava medium grind is the traditional option: a high-potency Fijian root with a smooth, earthy, mild flavor, ground for kneading and straining.

Micronized and instant kava: the no-strain forms

Micronized kava is root milled ultra-fine, fine enough that the powder mixes straight into water and you drink the whole thing, fiber and all, with no straining. Instant kava starts one step further along: kava that was already prepared and filtered, then dried back into a powder that reconstitutes in water. Sellers use the two words loosely and sometimes for the same product, which is why buyers get confused. The practical test is the cup: micronized powder disperses and can leave fine sediment, while true instant dissolves cleaner because the fiber was filtered out before drying.

Our micronized instant kava powder is noble kava root ground ultra-fine at 6.73% kavalactones. It mixes straight into water or a drink with no kneading or straining, which makes it the fastest shell we sell.

Kava extract: standardized kavalactone percentages

Kava extract is a concentrated powder standardized to a stated kavalactone percentage, so the strength is a number on the label instead of a property of the batch you brewed. We carry two: a 30% kava extract standardized to 30% kavalactones, the gentler standardized option, and a 70% kava extract standardized to 70% kavalactones for experienced kava users, both made from premium kava root and free of additives. Both are in our kava shop alongside the traditional and micronized forms. Extracts are the most concentrated form per gram, so they are measured in small amounts, not scooped like root powder.

Which kava form should you buy?

  • Want the traditional preparation and control over the batch: medium grind.

  • Want a shell in under a minute with no strainer bag: micronized instant.

  • Want a stated kavalactone percentage and the most concentrated form: the 30% extract to start, the 70% if you already know extracts.

Every form above comes from the same plant. The choice is prep time, texture, and how standardized you want the strength to be. All of our kava is sold for adults 21 and over.
