Kratom Extract vs Powder: Concentration, Form and Price Compared

Kratom extract vs powder is the most basic buying question in kratom, and the difference is concentration. Kratom powder is the dried leaf itself, ground. Kratom extract is that leaf processed down so its main alkaloid, mitragynine, makes up a stated percentage of the finished product. Same plant, very different strength per gram, and the two are measured, priced and chosen differently.

What kratom powder is

Plain kratom powder is dried Mitragyna speciosa leaf, milled. Nothing is concentrated and nothing is removed, so the mitragynine content is whatever the leaf carries: usually about 1 to 2% by weight, roughly 10 to 20 mg of mitragynine per gram, varying by batch and source. Powder is the cheapest form per gram, the most forgiving to measure, and the traditional starting point. Servings are measured in grams.

What kratom extract is

Extract starts as leaf and is reduced: the alkaloids are drawn out and concentrated into a smaller amount of material, then dried or rendered into a finished form. The result is standardized to a tested mitragynine percentage. Ours are sold as 30% mitragynine kratom extract (about 300 mg per gram), 70% extracts in freebase and water soluble salt forms (about 700 mg per gram), and an 85% mitragynine freebase extract (about 850 mg per gram). We also render a kratom extract resin in-house. Extract servings are measured in fractions of a gram on a milligram scale, never in spoonfuls. Our kratom extract percentages explained guide covers the numbers in full.

Is kratom extract stronger than powder?

By concentration, yes, and it is not close. Gram for gram, a 70% extract carries roughly 35 to 70 times the mitragynine of plain leaf powder, because the leaf is 1 to 2% and the extract is 70%. That is exactly why the two are not interchangeable in a recipe, a capsule, or a serving: swapping extract for powder at the same weight is the most common and most avoidable mistake new extract buyers make. Start any extract at a small fraction of your powder amount, measured on a scale that reads to 0.001g.

Extract vs powder, side by side

  • Concentration: powder is 1 to 2% mitragynine and varies naturally. Extract is standardized, 30% to 85% in our range.

  • Measuring: powder in grams with a kitchen scale or scoop. Extract in milligrams with a precision scale.

  • Forms: powder is one form. Extract comes as freebase powder, water soluble salt powder, and resin. See kratom extract resin vs powder and kratom extract salt vs freebase.

  • Price: powder costs less per gram. Extract costs more per gram and far less per milligram of mitragynine, and a gram of extract goes much further.

  • Experience: powder suits beginners and traditional preparation. Extracts are for experienced users who already know the plant.

Which should you buy?

Buy powder if you are new, want the traditional preparation, or prefer the most forgiving measuring. Buy extract if you are experienced, want a standardized percentage, and own a milligram scale. Both, and every form between them, are in our kratom extracts shop and the wider kratom range, sold for adults 21 and over.
